Description Kwakiutl Chief’s Storage Chest Date:19th Century Dimensions:26”x 17 1/4″ x 13 1/2” H Artist: Kwakiutl unknown Materials: Cedar and vermillion red, green, and black pigments Description: A wonderful Kwakiutl chief’s chest with striking carved imagery featuring a central grizzly bear flanked by eagle heads on the front, the sides each with single elements of eyes, limbs and ears represented. The back has a framed a pair of rectangular red and green patterns with fine tool marks as part of the design. This type of chest would have been used to store the chief’s ceremonial regalia . A similar chest by the same hand is part of a museum collection. Beautiful original pigments and fine original old patina makes this a striking display piece and museum worthy. The lid is a well made replacement made from a single piece of old growth aged cedar. Provenance: USA Private collection.
