From the “Graham Line” Review: There are few sources of information about the Union Pacific in Idaho at the end of the steam era and “Smoke Down the Canyons” is a thorough and accurate survey of UP operations in the southern part of the state. Each branch and its facilities are briefly described and the descriptions are accompanied by photos of day-to-day operations. Many of the photos are framed to give a good idea of the area’s general appearance; this is not simply a collection of locomotive roster shots. A careful reading yields a great deal of information about traffic sources and operating patterns.
